Beautifully crafted and written but I can’t say that I enjoyed reading this book.
'Sula' is a novel set in Medallion, Ohio and follows two, African American girls called 'Sula' and 'Nel', who are best friends, as they grow up and grow apart. This is a sad book full of tradgedy and pain, think: suicide, mental illness, murder and adultery. However, I felt no sadness, just horror and nausea. None of the characters were particularly likable. But perhaps that was the point.
I’m not sure what Toni Morrison was trying to say with this novel… perhaps that evil is in all of us and that we are just looking for someone to blame for all our faults… perhaps that societies norms are all vain constructions, even love and faithfullness.
Altogether, didn’t leave me with a sweet taste in my mouth. And I can’t say that I agree with Morrison’s point of view.
